Description of Project: | THE ORIGINAL BURRILL HALL BUILDING BUILT IN 1957, HOUSING THE SCHOOL OF MOLECULAR BIOLOGY AND CELLULAR BIOLOGY IS IN NEED OF A SYSTEM AND SPACE UPGRADE. THIS UPGRADE FOR BURRILL HALL IS OUTLINED IN BOTH THE BURRILL HALL-MASTER PLAN FEASIBILITY STUDY PERFORMED BY BLDD ARCHITECTS, INC. BACK IN FEBRUARY 11, 2002 AS WELL AS THE CURRENT VFA REPORT. THIS PROJECT WILL PRIMARILY INCLUDE WHAT IS OUTLINED IN THE FEASIBILITY STUDY AS PHASE 7, RENOVATIONS OF THE FIRST FLOOR ALONG WITH GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS MADE FROM THE SAME STUDY. THE VFA REPORT CATEGORIZES THESE RENOVATIONS AS INTEGRITY, BUILDING CODE AND ACCESSIBILITY ITEMS AND OFFERS SOLUTIONS THAT ARE MORE CURRENT WITH CAMPUS STANDARDS. ; RANKING 17TH IN ENERGY USAGE ON CAMPUS, BURRILL HALL IS IN NEED OF MECHANICAL, UTILITY AND PLUMBING UPGRADES. REPLACING AND UPDATING EQUIPMENT AND/OR PARTS TO THE MANY SYSTEMS WILL AID IN ENERGY REDUCTION AND SYSTEM RELIABILITY. THESE INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO NEW SUPPLY AIR UNITS WITH MODIFIED AIR DISTRIBUTION AND UPDATED CONTROLS, NEW HOT WATER STORAGE TANKS, NEW SUMP PUMPS AND MODIFICATIONS TO THE STEAM, CONDENSATE, CHILLED WATER, CONDENSER WATER AND THE HEATING WATER STEAM SYSTEMS. ; THE LIFE-SAFETY WORK FOR THIS PROJECT INCLUDES A WET FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM FOR THE FIRST FLOOR, A FIRE NOTIFICATION SYSTEM, SAFETY GLASS AND OTHER LIFE-SAFETY COMPONENTS. ALL THESE THINGS ARE NECESSARY TO PROVIDE CODE-COMPLIANT EGRESS PATHS AND TO ENHANCE THE LEVEL OF SAFETY FOR THE USERS. ; GIVEN THE AGE OF THE BUILDING, THE INTERIOR WORK INVOLVES A GREAT AMOUNT OF ASBESTOS ABATEMENT SUSPECTED IN THE FLOOR TILES, CEILING TILES AND PIPE/EQUIPMENT INSULATION. ONCE COMPLETE, THE COMMON CORRIDOR SPACE OF THE FIRST FLOOR WILL BE IN NEED OF NEW FLOORING AND A NEW CEILING SYSTEM INCLUDING ENERGY EFFICIENT LIGHT FIXTURES. |
